Why Quizzes Help You Remember
Answering questions is not just a test of what you know. It is one of the better ways to remember it.
The testing effect
Psychologists describe the testing effect: long-term memory improves when part of learning time is spent retrieving information rather than only rereading it. A quiz is retrieval practice disguised as a game.
Spacing it out
Spaced repetition means reviewing material at increasing intervals. Many flashcard apps are built on this idea. A weekly lunch quiz that brings back a few earlier questions uses the same principle.
Using quizzes at work or school
- End a training session with a short, low-stakes quiz rather than a summary slide.
- Repeat key questions a week or two later.
- Explain the answer after each question, so wrong answers become learning.
Low stakes matter. A quiz that feels like an exam brings stress back in, and the fun is what keeps people coming.
