How to Write a Good Trivia Question
A good question is fair, short and has exactly one right answer. Most bad questions fail on the last point.
What a quiz question is for
A quiz is a game in which players answer questions to test their knowledge. The best questions make people think they might know the answer, so even a wrong guess feels like taking part.
Five rules that cover most problems
- One answer only. If two answers could be defended, rewrite the question.
- Check it twice. Confirm every answer in a reliable reference before using it.
- Avoid "first", "biggest" and "only" unless you are sure. These words are where most disputes start.
- Keep it short. If the question needs to be read twice, it is too long for a quick round.
- Give a way in. A clue inside the question rewards reasoning, not just memory.
Mix the difficulty
Plan a round as easy, medium and hard questions in a mixed order. A run of hard questions early makes casual players switch off.
Write the answer sheet as you go
Record the answer, any acceptable alternatives and where you checked it. It saves arguments later.
